understanding machine behavior
This is an amusing article:
http://www.trnmag.com/Stories/2004/...ons_061604.html
(for more info the researcher's web page is at http://zai.ini.unizh.ch/janjan/inde...0ed096b21b0166f)
The article is about visualizing the behavior of machines. They use clustering algorithms to map the state space of the machine into a smaller number of clusters, which can then be displayed visually.
The motivation for this work is very much AI driven -- which i am generally suspicious of. What heartened me however was the quote:
"In coming up with a way to convey the data, the researchers were careful to avoid any anthropomorphic representations that human observers might associate with particular behaviors or intentions, according to van der Vyver. Those associations are not likely to correspond to the machine's behavior, he said. "
