Substitution systems for music

A grad student at Columbia, Roger Luke DuBois, has written an interesting dissertation on using various substitution systems - especially L-systems - as generators of structure for musical composition.

The title is "Applications of Generative String Substitution Systems in Computer Music". His page containing links to his dissertation is here -
