Modeling urban growth - a sample open problem in Applied NKS

Reviewing various recent papers I came across an issue that clearly calls for applied NKS methods, but does not seem to have really developed them yet. The issue is modeling urban growth. CA like methods seem clearly applicable to this subject. There is good data, for instance in the following paper by Martin Herold, Noah C. Goldstein and Keith C. Clarke -

These people understand their empirical subject. What it seems to me they need is people familiar with NKS modeling methods and programming, to work with them and develop simple program models that can reproduce the main features they see in their data.
