{crow} systems:

cells in these 1-dimensional systems, in addition to being aware of themselves and their 2 nearest neighbors, are also able to remember their own state from the previous moment.

I'm currently exploring other CAs whose cells have memory. one set of them, the {ant} systems, I will post pictures of soon.

Nice pictures. Would it not be fair to say that the process you have in mind can be emulated by a subset of the 4 color ECAs in which if {left neighbor, center, right neighbor} transforms to x then {Mod[leftneighbor+2,4], center, Mod[rightneighbor+2,4]} must also transform to x?
