starting conditions predict behavior?

I'm intrigued by the statement on pg. 270 of the NKS text (my is signed by the Wolfram - brag brag) that "In every example in this book where nested patterns like those from rule 90 are obtained it turns out that the underlying rules that are responsible can be set up to behave exactly like rule 90."

I wonder how far this research has gone. Before I conduct various experiments I'd like to know if someone else has already done anything with this.

Can all binary CA rules (the only ones I'm really interested in) be forced into a few standard patterns based on their inital starting conditions? What are those patterns? What is the relationship between the rule and the starting condition?

Thanks for any input,
Ed M
