The April 23 issue of Physical Review Letters has a focus article on phyllotaxis, relating some of the patterns seen to Fibonacci numbers on the one hand, and trying to trace them to a strain energy minimizing principle within the growing plant on the other hand. The authors are Patrick D. Shipman and Alan C. Newell.
