These movies are density plots of 3-dimensional CAs.
Each cell takes into account itself and six of its neighbors...if the cell is viewed as a cube, the six neighbors it takes into account are the six cells whose cubes share a face with the cell's cube.
The movie is produced by looking through the 3d CA and rendering based on the density of ,,occupied/turned on,, cells...darker areas of the plot indicate that the beam we're using to view the 3d space hit more activated cells in its trip through the space.
(9 december 2006: The shades-of-gray movies are density plots as described...the black-and-white movies show a slice of the 3d space through time.)
