levels of description of CA models

the Life Forms generated in the Game of Life are not 'real'' in the sense of being 'objects' but simply visualizations resulting from the turning of cells on and off. but it occurs to me after reading Hawking's new book

(which i read as saying that there are different levels of description of natural phenomena, equally valid - such as laws of chemistry which refer to molecules but not to subatomic particles or laws of biology based on biological entities but not the molecules that comprise them)

that it might be possible to formulate laws for the behavior of the various life forms in the game of life rather than laws for the behavior of grid cells (eg. a law for the movement of a glider or a law for a still life (that would seem trivial). of course, this would get complicated as various life forms interacted with other (especially when there are collisions between life forms). does anyone know if this kind of computation has been done? it would seem to be invaluable in demonstrating the validity of Hawking's view and also of the NKS approach.
