I'm interested in searching for embeddings of one-dimensional elementary cellular automata inside of two-dimensional automata.

That is, a wire (which does not necessarily have bends).

This is a pretty straightforward idea, so it has probably been done before (even more than once). Can anyone here think of a useful pointer?
