Here is a 3-colour totalistic 1-D CA simulator for Excel (nb: this differs to the CA on p.60 etc in that it ignores the previous value of the cell, only looking at the neighbours. This means you have only 5 states to define (0,0.5,1,1.5,2) and not 7, giving only 3^5=243 possible rules.

Interestingly this does produce complex structures beyond the Sierpinski triangle, although not the 'edge' states.
