A group at UC San Diego has a paper in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on metabolic schemes in simulate E Coli. Basically they are interested in how the huge space of possible genomes maps into a surprisingly limited number of metabolic strategies, acting as a suitable cover of a range of environmental conditions.
