Determing how to find rules/programs based on some natural pattern

So, I have just started with NKS and I am a believer. But how do you go from some natural phenomenon (where that natural pattern could be a series of numbers) to building CA Rules?

For example, I was just looking at the rules to build square a number given some input. How would you determine the rules in that case?
