Mark Leach has chemisty website on the variety of molecular structure up from the elements (as well as properties of elements, analysis of the periodic table, etc), which he calls "chemogenesis", here -

http://www.meta-synthesis.com/webbook.html

"Chemogenesis tells the story of how molecular structure & reactivity emerge from the periodic table of the elements"

It includes a 3 page overview of systems and complexity theory applied to chemistry, here -

http://www.meta-synthesis.com/webbo...complexity.html

"The science of chemistry – chemistry, the whole thing – is analysed in terms of systems thinking. First, the idea of the system is introduced, along with the concepts of complexity, fractal, automata, emergence & chaos. After this, some familiar chemistry topics with simple, linear behaviours are described, before moving on to regions of chemistry space where things get more complicated."

In nuclear chemistry, explaining the pattern of stability within all isotopes is a fun open problem -

Leach links an interactive Segre chart with data, here -

Ed Pegg has pointed out this problem in the past. See his page about it here -
