In NKS, Wolfram suggested that many features of living organisms are governed by simple programs which are not as complicated as their output. Has anyone been able to produce artificial life using simple programs, i.e., produce output which resembles living things like an amoeba or at least some type of biological system?

It depends on what you mean by "resemble".
There is an active artificial life research community, (run a Google search), but for the most part their methods are more complicated than the simple rules which are found in NKS. The results are for the most part suggestive, that artificial life (on the computer) is possible, rather than doing anything in detail, say as complicated as the detailed behavior of an amoeba.
A few of the former NKS summer school students have been working on artificial life using NKS methods. As far as I know, it is still work in progress.
