Yet another automaton: across & down

Having enjoyed NKS, wishfulness compels me to imagine that the application at the URL below is in some way related. The application was originally created with Conway's Life in mind: I wanted to see how multiple iterations would evolve spatially so I coded across & down in the programming language J. But to make the web demo available required translating the code to the programming language perl -- used in the URL below -- a language I tried to learn for the project. I never explored the spatial evolution aspect much, but NKS has rekindled such an interest.
