I've been using Mathematica to help develop a musical system determined by the motion of the planets. The idea was described by J.Kepler in his book "The Harmony of the World", in which he shows how planetary angular velocities may be mapped reasonably well onto the musical scale. My project page is http://harmony.sourceforge.net

Recently mathematica has been useful for interfacing with ephemeris data (via J/Link), generating plots and solar system models, and doing simple calculations.

One goal of the project is to find moments in time when the angular velocities are in the same proportion as notes on a musical scale, be it just intonation, equal temperment or otherwise. For example, using Mathematica I was able to determine that Venus, Earth and Mars determine an inverted major triad around July 23, 2005.

I am curious how cellular automata might be applicable to generating audio waveforms based on a few simple, perhaps geometric, rules.
