I've written an open-source Java program that composes music from elementary cellular automata. Anyone who is interested can find details here:

http://www.automatous-monk.com

or at the project development site:

Hi Paul:

Thanks for making this available. I'll download and play with it later today.

I just came across one of the presenters at the NKS Conference here in Massachusetts that has created a Max object with their MIDI interpretation of the cellular automata information. I can let you know how that one works.

Eduardo,

What is a Max object?

Paul

Hi Paul:

Max/MSP is a graphical language/environment for both Macs and Windows machines, that can be used to work with MIDI and audio.

Highly programmable and runs natively on the computer.

This program has now appeared on Slashdot

Hi Eduardo,

Is this the CA-Cophony software? I've been trying to get information on it and the corresponding talk, "Music and NKS: Looking at and Listening to NKS", but cannot find anything beyond the abstract.

Yes, it is. I have not received email responses from the creator, John Kiehl, in a few weeks now. I'll email him and see that it is ok that you contact him.

I've found some more information on it here:

So now you have as much info as I have, probably except getting a copy of the actual MAX/MSP object/patch.

I noticed the other collaborator's name & email. May be you could get a copy or additional details from him.
