I've recently started to get into microcontrollers with TI's MSP430 on the Launchpad.

I was thinking an interesting application might be to use the device to drive a display with interesting patterns from NKS. I think I could build it into a box with some lights and the result would be pretty entrancing.

I'd also thought about trying to build a device to generate something like Wolfram Tones -- maybe in a portable, battery-powered unit.

Has anyone attempted this sort of thing? I've seen projects that do game of life, but I think the patterns from the Wolfram codes are more interesting visually.

I took a look at some different kinds of displays. LED displays are more visually stunning while LCD displays get more dots for the dollar. I'm hoping someone with some experience with this sort of thing could suggest what kind of display resolution I would want in order to be able to show interesting patterns. The higher resolution models get pretty pricey and I'd like to try to do this somewhat inexpensively.

Replying to myself:

I found this amazing video on YouTube which is similar to what I'd like to do although I think the propeller is a much more powerful chip than what I've got.
