We are pleased to announce that Mathematica 6 is now shipping. Now you know what many of us have been working on for the past few months, and why activity here might have seemed a little low.

Mathematica 6 is a great tool for studying NKS, among many other things. You can check out the new features at

http://wolfram.com/

Those who attended our most recent NKS summer programs have seen some of the new capabilities in an alpha version of 6, but not the whole thing.

One of the biggest advances of 6 for NKS purposes is the way symbolic dynamics - especially the new function Manipulate - allows one to navigate the huge spaces of possible programs and initial conditions one encounters in NKS work.

Basically, if you have code that displays a single instance of your "critter", you can now see them all by making all the parameters controlling them into variables, and change those variables interactively in real time. Instead of searching through pages of tables of system evolutions, they flash in front of you as fast or as slow as you like. You can "steer" to particular cases, conduct an intuitive form of sensitivity analysis, take snapshots of interesting behaviors to analyze later, etc.

We've also created a Demonstrations site full of examples of this, in every sort of field. And we are making it possible for anyone to contribute additional examples. We'd love to get more NKS ones from members here. You can find the Demonstrations Project site here -

http://demonstrations.wolfram.com/

You can preview Demonstrations on the web. If you own Mathematica, you can author your own. You can also fully explore existing Demonstrations with a free client, Mathematica Player, even if you don't have Mathematica. Player will also let you read 6 notebooks more generally, and the like.

The details on and links to download Mathematica Player can be found here -

http://www.wolfram.com/products/player/

There are lots of other things in 6 - like all sorts of real world data, sophisticated nonlinear optimization routines, etc. See the wolfram.com homepage above for more details.

The most basic of the new features is the Manipulate function.

It can be used to make a quick survey of a small space in the computational universe. For instance, the basic NKS experiment can be viewed dynamically with

Manipulate[ArrayPlot[CellularAutomaton[rule,{{1},0},{20,All}]],{rule,0,255,1}]

I am a user of Mathematica 5.2 for Students. Is there a set date for when users like me could update to Mathematica 6 for Students? On the Wolfram Website, I just noticed that Mathematica 6 for Students was "coming soon." How soon?
